#5: Long-Term Planning Issues
Two of my beloved uncles passed away within a month of each other in October last year, and as I’m writing this, I’m still helping my family deal with both emotional and financial actions that need to happen. I was thankful to have gone through the National Institute of Certified Estate Planners (NICEP) coursework and exam earlier last year to gain my Certified Estate Planner(tm) designation. In addition to dealing with the loss and sadness, the last thing my family wants to do is slog through the bureaucratic red tape that comes along with someone’s passing. But it’s part of the deal. So if I can help make it easier for you to handle by planning for the eventuality, what a gift that makes for those left behind. That’s what we call estate planning. And it truly is about people.
It can be hard to face your own mortality, but it’s going to happen eventually. As part of the thorough plan I’ll put together with you, we’ll cover estate planning in detail. To give you a quick overview, estate planning is the systematic development and updating of goals, policies, and procedures for all of the property you own, whatever it is worth, and wherever it is located. At the heart of estate planning, people aren't as concerned about what happens to their assets as they are more naturally concerned about what will happen to their family. “What will life look like for my family...when I die, or during my old age, or if I experience a prolonged illness or go through a period of incompetency or incapacity?” A well crafted estate plan will answer those questions.
In addition to your estate property, we’ll talk about healthcare decisions, incapacity and more. I think about these tasks like going to the doc or dentist. It may not be fun to do, but you sure feel better and more empowered after doing it, knowing it’s taken care of for your loved ones, responsibility fulfilled.
It’s good to have a plan, and someone to talk to with the knowledge and resources to help. I’m here for you.
