How the restaurant business taught me how to be a great Financial Advisor
Before becoming a financial advisor, I worked in the restaurant industry for many years. It’s fast-paced, unpredictable and demanded both strategy and flexibility. The lessons I learned there shaped how I guide my financial planning clients today.
In restaurants, you learn quickly how to think ahead because timing and preparation are everything; anticipating and preparing for the next rush, the next order or the next challenge. Financial planning works the same way. You need to prepare for what’s coming, not just react to what’s happening right now.
You also have to set goals, whether it’s hitting nightly sales or reducing waste. In your financial life, goals give direction so you know what you’re working towards. Those goals could be retirement, buying a home or car, paying for school and building wealth or many others, personal to you. The priority and order of your goals are entirely unique. Having a financial planner can help you clarity that decision making.
It’s pretty hard to run a restaurant alone. You have to ask for help when you need it. Likewise, a financial plan works best when you lean on experts and trusted advisors to guide you. And just like in restaurants, it’s wise to have a backup plan because life doesn’t always go as expected. Many of you know the phrase “aces in their places.” Allocating resources strategically and having the best team in place when you need them makes all the difference. In personal finance, that means your financial advisor, your estate attorney, your accountant and even the custodian where you keep your wealth.
Don’t eat your profits! The same is true of your money. Discipline and delayed gratification lead to long-term success. And along the way, having a good coach in the kitchen or a good financial advisor in your corner helps you stay on track.
What I learned in the restaurant business was more than how to serve great meals alongside great people. It was how to prepare, adapt and thrive. Those same lessons now guide me as I help clients build financial plans that last.
